Invent to Learn Workshop – Southern California

Full-day hands-on workshop with Sylvia Martinez
co-author of Invent to Learn: Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroom

November 7, 2019
Hosted by Viewpoint School

Make & learn in this cutting-edge workshop!

Join colleagues for a day of hard fun, creativity, and problem solving—where computing meets tinkering, design, and the best practices in education. The workshop begins with the case for project-based learning, making, tinkering, and engineering. You will explore examples of children engaged in complex problem solving with new game-changing technologies and identify lessons for your own classroom practice. Powerful ideas from the Reggio Emilia Approach, breakthroughs in science education, and the global maker movement combine to create rich learning experiences.

Most of all, you will learn by making with exciting NEW materials! Learn how Scratch 3.0, micro:bits, the new Hummingbird Bit robotics kit, Circuit Playground Express, Makey Makey, Microsoft Makecode, microblocks, and other emerging technology can supercharge not only STEAM, but all subjects. Not only is it unprecedented for as much computational power to be accessible to children and usable in a playful creative fashion, but the low cost of these materials democratize powerful learning opportunities. These technologies and related constructive materials create great opportunities to bring progressive education ideals to life in any school. They also provide a fertile context for learning coding, engineering, and physical computing projects that bridge the digital and physical worlds. During the workshop, we will also discuss how to integrate project-based learning across the curriculum.

Lunch and continental breakfast will be provided. The Viewpoint School has just completed a spectacular makerspace remodel and we will have the opportunity to tour the facilities and learn more about their makerspace journey during the day.
