SUMMARY:EngagED NWI (Sylvia keynote)
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia will keynote the EngagED NWI conference in Lowell\, IN on June 17 & 18. \nJune 18 Keynote: \nLessons for K-12 Educators from the Maker Movement \nThe Maker Movement is a revolutionary global collaboration of people learning to solve problems with modern tools and technology. Adults and children are combining new technologies and timeless craft traditions to create exciting projects and control their world. The implications are profound for schools and districts concerned with engaging students\, maintaining relevance\, and preparing children to solve problems unanticipated by the curriculum. The technological game-changers of 3D printing\, physical computing and computer science require and fuel transformations in the learning environment. K-12 educators can adapt the powerful technology and “can do” maker ethos to revitalize learner-centered teaching and learning in all subject areas. \nFollow up session: \nPBL Gets a “Make”-Over – Prompts\, Scaffolding\, and Assessment for the Maker Classroom \nOf course students should have powerful hands-on project-based experiences in the classroom – but how does that happen? This session will explore how to design engaging prompts with helpful (but not TOO helpful) scaffolding. We will also discuss how to manage the project process when students are using cutting-edge technology integrated with iterative design. Participants will learn about new research on assessment for projects and real classroom practices with students using modern technology and materials. \n \n

SUMMARY:Perth\, Australia - Making\, Love\, and Learning
DESCRIPTION:GARY STAGER FORUMS ANNOUNCED\n\nThe SSTUWA welcomes Gary Stager to engage\, motivate and celebrate with school leaders and teachers. Gary Stager’s conference presentations\, keynote addresses and school presentations are known for being provocative\, witty and full of examples of children doing remarkable things. \nThis internationally recognized educator\, author\, speaker and consultant returns to Perth for the first time in years to share his observations collected from direct experience in schools around the world. Although there are powerful forces hell bent on eroding the public’s confidence in education\, privatizing public schools\, and turning classrooms into joyless factories focused on standardization\, there is room for great optimism as well. \nIn the 21st Century\, educators need to create productive contexts for learning in which students are prepared to solve problems their school never even imagined. \nMaking\, Love and Learning\nA FORUM DESIGNED FOR ALL EDUCATORS \nArt and science converge and are amplified by computing. When the artificial boundaries between subject areas are blurred and ever student requires the same process skills and tools\, the distinction between vocational and academic education are obliterated. \nJoin Gary to reflect and consider new ideas and skills to support learner-centred practices that prepare kids to solve problems teachers would never anticipate! \nClick Here To Register Online

SUMMARY:How and Why To Teach Children to Code
DESCRIPTION:Presidents\, Prime Ministers\, Silicon Valley billionaires\, and members of the maker community are calling for children to “code.\,” but what does that mean? Web sites and non-profit organizations have been created based on the assumption that self-selecting kids will teach themselves. Such an approach leaves too much to chance and assures inequitable opportunity. A presenter with 30+ years of experience will explore the how\, what\, and why of teaching computer science to children in a developmentally appropriate fashion so they learn a lot more than just how to code. Pedagogical strategies will be shared.

SUMMARY:Leadership 3.0 Symposium 2014 - Sylvia (keynote)
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia will be the closing keynote for the Leadership 3.0 Symposium\, April 10-12\, 2014 in San Mateo\, CA. \nThe Maker Movement: What School Leaders Need to Know – April 12\, 11AM\nThe Maker Movement is a global revolution celebrating creativity\, ingenuity\, problem-solving\, and lifelong learning using modern tools and technology. \n \nThe Leadership 3.0 Symposium is a collaborative effort of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA)\, Computer Using Educators\, Inc. (CUE)\, Technology Information Center for Administrative Leadership (TICAL). It is truly “for administrators\, by administrators.” Three organizations\, one mission – Educational Leadership for the 21st century.
