DESCRIPTION:Gary will return to The American School of Bombay for the 5th time and his 3rd ASB Unplugged Conference. \nHis sessions include: \nProgramming: The New Liberal Art – Why and How to Teach It (full-day preconference) \nIn the mid-1960s\, Seymour Papert asked\, “Does the computer program the child or the child program the computer.” Programming is a way of seeing. \nBeyond vocational benefits\, computer programming gives young people agency over an increasingly complex technologically sophisticated world. Programming is fundamental to engineering\, science\, making sense of data\, and mirrors the writing process. If your goals are as modest as to improve achievement in ab otherwise unchanged mathematics curriculum\, then we would teach every child to program computers since programming is one of the few contexts for using the math taught to kids. Without programming\, computational thinking becomes a rhetorical exercise. \nDespite these self-evident benefits\, schools go to extraordinary lengths to deprive students of programming experiences. \nThis workshop will provide hands-on experience with creating beautiful art in Turtle Art\, controlling external devices with Snap!\, and flying drones with Tickle (an iPad dialect of Scratch). Examples of K-8 programming integration projects will be shared and we will look at options for teaching the new Computer Science Principles AP course. Strategies for teaching programming across the curriculum and various grade levels will be discussed. \nMaking: Children\, Computers\, and Powerful Ideas (3-hour talk repeated on consecutive mornings) \nWhile this presentation will explore the virtues of learning-by-making and its theoretical and historical contexts\, we will discuss the structural changes necessary to for schools to gain benefit from the maker movement. We must recognize that making is not new\, but may still become a short-term fad without a coherent constructive educational vision having little to do with the construction of a “space.” The roles of expertise\, continuous growth\, prompt setting\, project development\, and curricular design to create the conditions necessary for sustaining and learning from making.

Didactische technologie\, e-learning en onze nieuwe netwerk samenleving verandert het ‘normale’ concept van leren\, de rol van de docent en het begrip van kennis. \nTijdens het Making Shift Happen congres gaan wij op zoek naar de vaardigheden die onze kinderen zouden moeten leren om een bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan de samenleving van de (nabije) toekomst. Om dit samen met u nader te onderzoeken hebben wij een aantal buitenlandse onderzoekers en wetenschappers uitgenodigd\, die ieder vanuit hun expertise aan dit onderzoek een bijdrage leveren. \nMet trots kondigen wij daarom als eerste spreker Sugata Mitra aan: de TEDx Onderwijs ‘man van het jaar’ 2013. Hij ontving dat jaar een miljoen dollar om zijn onderzoek naar SOLE\, Self Organized Learning Environments\, verder vorm te geven. Mitra richtte hiermee de School in the Cloud op. Hier gaan kinderen op verkenning en kunnen van elkaar leren met middelen en mentoren ‘in the Cloud’\, waar ook ter wereld. \nParallel hieraan is de Makers Movement in het onderwijs in forse ontwikkeling\, een wereldwijde revolutionaire beweging waarbij nieuwe technologieën en ambachtelijke tradities gecombineerd worden om zo via spannende en boeiende ‘maak’projecten nieuwe dingen te leren. Het leerproces via het maken is zowel fysiek als cognitief\, en veel minder gericht op uit het hoofd leren en het maken van toetsen. Wat dit betekent voor de lessen en het klaslokaal zal Sylvia Martinez toelichten in haar keynote. Gary Stager bespreekt wat dit betekent voor de docent\, die een ontwerper van een nieuwe stimulerende leeromgeving moet wordt. \nAlleen door werkelijk de principes van ‘play\, passion and purpose’ te omarmen kunnen wij een van de meest urgente kwesties uit het onderwijs en de samenleving beantwoorden\, namelijk hoe wij kunnen leren om problemen op een creatieve manier op te lossen. Volgens Tony Wagner is daarom onze opdracht: to create innovators. Vooral de capaciteit om te innoveren zal onze toekomstige burgers staande houden en ze een (welvarende) toekomst tegemoet laten gaan. Wagner zal hierop ingaan niet alleen door middel van een keynote speech\, maar hij laat ook korte video’s en een preview van de film Most Likely to Succeed zien: een speelfilm over onderwijzen en leren in de 21e eeuw. \nTevens hebben wij de High Tech High scholen (PO en VO) uit San Diego gevraagd om een workshop te komen geven. Deze school is van de grond af aan opgebouwd met als uitgangspunt dat docenten en leerlingen elkaar inspireren en motiveren en dat iedereen voortdurend blijft leren. Inspiratie\, motivatie\, dialoog\, reflectie en professional development\, zijn de kernwoorden. Dialoog tussen leerlingen onderling\, tussen docenten onderling en tussen leerlingen en docenten. Reflectie gericht op voortgang\, vaardigheden en samenwerking. Reflectie\, ook door docenten. Streven naar deep learning\, naar burgerschapsdoelen en naar creativiteit. HTH maakt deel uit van de Makers Movement in Amerika: leren door dingen te maken en te produceren. Leerlingen leren op die school met hun hoofd\, hart en handen.
