The workshop begins with the case for project-based learning\, making\, tinkering and engineering. Next\, participants will discuss strategies for effective prompt-setting\, view examples of students engaged in complex problem-solving with new game-changing technologies and identify lessons for your own classroom practice. Powerful ideas from the Reggio Emilia Approach\, breakthroughs in science education\, and the global maker movement combine to create rich learning experiences. \nParticipants will have the chance to tinker with a range of exciting new low and high-tech construction materials that can really amplify the potential of your students. The day culminates in the planning of a classroom project based on the Think-Make-Improve (TMI) design model. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nhow new tools and technology can reinvigorate project-based learning\nbest classroom practices for integrating maker technology\nhow to plan engaging projects based on the TMI design model\nhow to choose the technologies with the maximum learning impact\nhow to make the case for making\, tinkering\, and engineering.\n\nFabrication with cardboard and found materials\, wearable computing\, Arduino\, robotics\, conductive ink and computer programming are all on the menu. \nBring a laptop and your imagination. We’ll supply the rest (craft materials\, art supplies\, construction elements). Invention is the mother of learning. \n  \nAbout the presenter: \nGary Stager is one of the world’s leading experts and advocates for computer programming\, robotics and learning-by-doing in classrooms. In 1990\, Dr Stager led professional learning in the world’s first laptop schools and played a major role in the early days of online education. In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world’s most prestigious education conferences\, Gary is a journalist\, teacher educator\, consultant\, professor\, software developer\, publisher and school administrator. A primary teacher by training\, he has taught students from preschool through to doctoral studies. Gary is the founder of the Constructing Modern Knowledge summer institute for educators and co-author of the best-selling book\, Invent To Learn – Making\, Tinkering\, and Engineering in the Classroom. When not on the road\, speaking or consulting\, Dr Stager serves as the Special Assistant to the Head of School for Innovation at The Willows Community School in Culver City\, California. DESCRIPTION:Gary will return to The American School of Bombay for the 5th time and his 3rd ASB Unplugged Conference. \nHis sessions include: \nProgramming: The New Liberal Art – Why and How to Teach It (full-day preconference) \nIn the mid-1960s\, Seymour Papert asked\, “Does the computer program the child or the child program the computer.” Programming is a way of seeing. \nBeyond vocational benefits\, computer programming gives young people agency over an increasingly complex technologically sophisticated world. Programming is fundamental to engineering\, science\, making sense of data\, and mirrors the writing process. If your goals are as modest as to improve achievement in ab otherwise unchanged mathematics curriculum\, then we would teach every child to program computers since programming is one of the few contexts for using the math taught to kids. Without programming\, computational thinking becomes a rhetorical exercise. \nDespite these self-evident benefits\, schools go to extraordinary lengths to deprive students of programming experiences. \nThis workshop will provide hands-on experience with creating beautiful art in Turtle Art\, controlling external devices with Snap!\, and flying drones with Tickle (an iPad dialect of Scratch). Examples of K-8 programming integration projects will be shared and we will look at options for teaching the new Computer Science Principles AP course. Strategies for teaching programming across the curriculum and various grade levels will be discussed. \nMaking: Children\, Computers\, and Powerful Ideas (3-hour talk repeated on consecutive mornings) \nWhile this presentation will explore the virtues of learning-by-making and its theoretical and historical contexts\, we will discuss the structural changes necessary to for schools to gain benefit from the maker movement. We must recognize that making is not new\, but may still become a short-term fad without a coherent constructive educational vision having little to do with the construction of a “space.” The roles of expertise\, continuous growth\, prompt setting\, project development\, and curricular design to create the conditions necessary for sustaining and learning from making.

In this series\, webinar participants describe how focusing on invention\, tinkering\, and design can deeply engage learners\, give tips for how to bring making into the classroom\, and discuss making in both in school and out of school settings.
