DESCRIPTION:A day of hard fun is in store for one and all!\nIn 1971\, our friends Cynthia Solomon and Seymour Papert published a paper that changed the world. “Twenty Things to Do with a Computer” not only explored computers as objects to think with and vehicles for self-expression\, this seminal paper advocated for 1:1 computing\, coding across the curriculum\, and gave birth to the modern maker movement. \nTen years later\, in 1981\, Papert published the most important book ever written about computers and learning\, “Mindstorms: Children\, Computers\, and Powerful Ideas.” This book raised the bar on how people perceived children’s relationship with computers and their ability to construct knowledge. \nOn June 26\, 2016 (one day before ISTE 2016)\, Constructing Modern Knowledge will proudly celebrate the 45th birthday of the maker movement and the 35th anniversary of Mindstorms. The workshop begins with the case for project-based learning\, making\, tinkering and engineering. Next\, participants will discuss strategies for effective prompt-setting\, view examples of students engaged in complex problem-solving with new game-changing technologies and identify lessons for your own classroom practice. Powerful ideas from the Reggio Emilia Approach\, breakthroughs in science education\, and the global maker movement combine to create rich learning experiences. \nParticipants will have the chance to tinker with a range of exciting new low and high-tech construction materials that can really amplify the potential of your students. The day culminates in the planning of a classroom project based on the Think-Make-Improve (TMI) design model. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nhow new tools and technology can reinvigorate project-based learning\nbest classroom practices for integrating maker technology\nhow to plan engaging projects based on the TMI design model\nhow to choose the technologies with the maximum learning impact\nhow to make the case for making\, tinkering\, and engineering.\n\nFabrication with cardboard and found materials\, wearable computing\, Arduino\, robotics\, conductive ink and computer programming are all on the menu. \nBring a laptop and your imagination. Invention is the mother of learning. \n  \nAbout the presenter: \nGary Stager is one of the world’s leading experts and advocates for computer programming\, robotics and learning-by-doing in classrooms. In 1990\, Dr Stager led professional learning in the world’s first laptop schools and played a major role in the early days of online education. In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world’s most prestigious education conferences\, Gary is a journalist\, teacher educator\, consultant\, professor\, software developer\, publisher and school administrator. A primary teacher by training\, he has taught students from preschool through to doctoral studies. SUMMARY:Inclusive makerspaces workshop at NCWIT (Sylvia)
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia will lead an interactive workshop on “how to design inclusive maker spaces” at the 2016 NCWIT Summit on Women and IT: Practices and Ideas to Revolutionize Computing being held May 16-18\, 2016 in Las Vegas\, Nevada at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa.  This workshop will run twice\, on Tuesday\, May 17th from 11:00AM-12:00PM\, with a repeating session from 1:00-2:00PM. \nThe National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is an NSF (National Science Foundation) funded change leader network of almost 700 (up from 575 last year) prominent corporations\, academic institutions\, government agencies\, and non-profits working to increase girls’ and women’s meaningful participation in computing.  To learn more about our mission\, our membership and past Summits please visit www.ncwit.org. \nThe NCWIT Summit is an annual gathering convening over 700 change-leaders (women and men) from organizations across the country.  The Summit provides leading-edge research and practices for recruiting\, retaining\, and raising awareness about girls and women in technology; opportunities to connect and collaborate in programs and workshops; and engaging speakers who provide research\, inspiration\, and encouragement. In addition to representatives from schools\, organizations and agencies across the K-16 pipeline\, our audience is comprised of prominent social scientists and computing executives from Microsoft\, Google\, HP\, Intel\, Bank of America\, Merck\, AT&T\, Apple\, Pfizer\, Bloomberg\, and over 60 other major corporations and corporate foundations.  There is no other convening group in computing like NCWIT.
