SUMMARY:Educon 2.9
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Martinez and Gary Stager will lead sessions at Educon 2.9\, January 27-29\, 2017 in Philadelphia. Educon is an innovation conference where we can come together\, both in person and virtually\, to discuss the future of schools. Every session will be an opportunity to discuss and debate ideas — from the very practical to the big dreams. \nSessions dates and locations TBA \nWhat the E? A Modern Understanding of Engineering in STEAM\n\nSylvia Martinez\n\nEngineering is one of the least discussed components of STEAM education. This session will be a conversation about what engineering should look like in K-12. Is it simply hands-on science? Do you need a special curriculum? Is it only for students who are thinking of engineering as a college major? \n\nComputer Science For All – Cutting through the opportunities\, challenges\, and confusion\n\nGary S. Stager Ph.D.\n\nPresident Obama recently proclaimed a goal of computer science education for every student. Progressive educators should lead such a movement. This session will explore the mutually supportive nature of making\, progressive ideals\, and computer science education\, while cutting through the confusion associated with the hype. \n\n\nThree Questions\n\nGary S. Stager Ph.D.\n\nMythopoeic theory suggests that you teach based on a personal myth about how learning occurs. When terms like genius\, revolution\, transformation\, and reform get tossed about\, it’s worth taking a deep breath to clarify basic beliefs about learning\, teaching\, and educational progress. We will explore three essential questions for educators.

This session will explore research\, resources\, and best practices to involve girls of all ages in STEM. Research shows that girls remain interested in STEM activities that are real and relevant\, yet teachers feel that they are both underprepared and discouraged by leadership to deliver this kind of curriculum. Administrators\, however\, report that they support and encourage these activities. Where is the disconnect? What is reality and how is it affecting students? What is really happening in classrooms despite the rhetoric of STEM/STEAM? Participants will learn about the potential to bring new tools and technology to K-12 classrooms to support hands-on learning across all grades and curriculum – plus areas that are of particular interest to girls\, such as inventions that help people\, sewable electronics\, e-textiles\, bio-materials\, citizen science\, and community projects. Hands-on projects and tools can engage girls (and all learners) in STEM activities that matter. We will explore how the collaborative\, tinkering nature of global revolutions like the maker movement\, open source\, and project-based learning dovetails with girls ability to work collaboratively and in a connected way. Creating a culture and climate of inclusion and equity\, goes well beyond the lessons in a classroom or buying the right tools and technology. Culture\, both in schools and organizations\, must be co-created and supported in multiple ways and over the long term. It is not just a once a year training\, or special opportunities for girls.\n\n\n\n\nC410: A Global Revolution Goes to School: The Maker Movement\nThursday 26 January 2:00 PM – 2:40 PM \n\nLocation: \nOrange County Convention Center – North 220AB\n\n\nTrack: \nFuture of EdTech Educator\n\nThe Maker Movement is a revolutionary global collaboration of people learning to solve problems with modern tools and technology. Adults and children are combining new technologies and timeless craft traditions to create exciting projects and control their world. The implications are profound for schools and districts concerned with engaging students\, maintaining relevance\, and preparing children to solve problems unanticipated by the curriculum. The technological game-changers of 3D printing\, physical computing and computer science require and fuel transformations in the learning environment. K-12 educators can adapt the powerful technology and “can do” maker ethos to revitalize learner-centered teaching and learning in all subject areas.

SUMMARY:Public lecture - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
DESCRIPTION:Gary and Sylvia will present a public lecture based on the book Invent To Learn: Making\, Tinkering\, and Engineering in the Classroom at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics\, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. \nMaking: A Way of Learning\nLearning outside of school is being transformed by the trends of tinkering\, maker culture and personal fabrication. Educators need to be mindful of this major shift in digital learning\, married to craft traditions\, and student agency to create productive contexts for learning. \nThe Maker ethos of constructionism\, or learning-by-making through first-hand experience will be explored in the context of projects using a range of analog and digital “construction” materials. Children can now use technology to create and solve their own problems. Affordable new tools and materials\, such as 3-D printers\, laser cutters\, Arduino microntrollers\, MaKey MaKey construction kits\, conductive paint and wearable computing components allow students to go farther than was imagined just a few years ago. Junk\, high-tech gear\, art supplies and engineering principles collide to expand human potential. \nArt and science converge and are amplified by computing. When the artificial boundaries between subject areas are blurred and every student requires the same process skills and tools\, the distinction between vocational and academic education are obliterated. In order for schools to seize the opportunities afforded by this “Maker” spirit\, educators need more than awareness that the world is changing. They need to develop new skills and redesign classroom environments to support learner-centered practices in order to prepare kids to solve problems their teachers never anticipated. \nAbout Gary Stager\, Ph.D.\nGary Stager is one of the world’s leading experts and advocates for computer programming\, robotics and learning-by-doing in classrooms. In 1990\, Dr. Stager led professional development in the world’s first laptop schools and played a major role in the early days of online education. In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world’s most prestigious education conferences\, Gary is a journalist\, teacher educator\, consultant\, professor\, software developer\, publisher\, and school administrator. An elementary teacher by training\, he has taught students from preschool through doctoral studies. Dr. Stager is the also founder of the Constructing Modern Knowledge summer institute for educators.\nDr. Stager is co-author of Invent To Learn – Making\, Tinkering\, and Engineering in the Classroom\, called the “bible of the maker movement in schools\,” by Larry Magid of CBS and The San Jose Mercury News.\nWhen Jean Piaget wanted to better understand how children learn mathematics\, he hired Seymour Papert. When Dr. Papert wanted to create a high-tech alternative learning environment for incarcerated at-risk teens\, he hired Gary Stager. This work was the basis for Gary’s doctoral dissertation and documented Papert’s most-recent institutional research project. \nWhen not on the road speaking or consulting\, Dr. Stager spent the past two years as the Special Assistant to the Head of School for Innovation at The Willows Community School in Culver City\, California. Dr. Stager’s work has earned a Ph.D. in Science and Mathematics Education and a Grammy Award. Gary is also on the advisory board of the NSF-funded project\, BJC4NYC: Bringing a Rigorous Computer Science Principles Course to the Largest School System in the US. \nAbout Sylvia Martinez\nSylvia works in schools around the world to bring the power of authentic learning into classrooms\, particularly in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Math (STEM) subjects. Sylvia speaks\, writes\, and advocates for student-centered project-based learning\, gender equity in STEM\, computer programming\, and life-long learning. She is also President of Constructing Modern Knowledge Press\, a publishing company dedicated to bringing books about constructionist learning by educators to educators.\nPrior to co-authoring Invent To Learn: Making\, Tinkering\, and Engineering in the Classroom\, Sylvia was President of Generation YES\, a non-profit with a mission of empowering young people to improve their schools and communities with modern technology. Before that\, Sylvia was in charge of product development at several software publishers\, designing and creating video games and educational software. Sylvia also enjoyed a career in aerospace engineering as a senior scientist on the GPS navigational satellite system research and development. She holds a masters in educational technology and a bachelors in electrical engineering.

SUMMARY:Vilnius University Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Monday September 26\, 13-16 at Vilnius University\, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (master degree students and some lectures):\n1. Reinventing School Mathematics\n2. Making: a Way of Learning \nWednesday September 28\, 13-18 at Vilnius University main building (old town):\n1. Ten Considerations When Proposing Computer Science for All (all children)\n2. Why Papert Matters\n3. Reinventing School Mathematics \nReinventing School Mathematics\nIt’s Time for Action! \nThere may be no greater gap between a discipline and the teaching done in its name than when the beauty\, power and mystery of mathematics become math instruction. One can only begin to address the systemic challenges of math education by understanding the nature of mathematics and the power of computing. Nearly 100 years of efforts to increase achievement with unchanged curricular content continues to fail spectacularly; yet\, we do not change course. Surely\, the widespread availability of computational technology demands new pedagogical approaches and a new diet of mathematics. \nThere has never been greater interest in mathematics education\, yet there is little consensus on how best to prepare children to face an increasingly complex future. We live at a time when politicians call for an emphasis on S.T.E.M. while students dislike math\, teachers lack confidence in their mathematical ability\, achievement is static and inequitable\, computational thinking is required for navigating a successful life\, and your phone can solve every problem in the existing math curriculum – simultaneously. Seymour Papert reminds us that our efforts might be better spent inventing a diet of mathematics children can love\, than developing tricks to teach them a mathematics they hate. \nTen Considerations When Proposing Computer Science for All (all children)\nPresident Obama recently proclaimed a goal of computer science education for every student. This follows similar proclamations made around the world. Educators\, especially those committed to learning by making\, should lead the movement to teach all kids to program\, but only after goals are clarified and Computer Science for All is defined. This lecture will explore the mutually supportive nature of making and computer science education\, while cutting through the confusion associated with the latest “opportunity” being delivered to schools. Exciting examples of what computer science in a constructive context look like will be shared and 10 powerful ideas of teaching CS discussed. \nThe presenter has four decades worth of experience teaching K-12 computer science in schools across the globe and is on the advisory board of the National Science Foundation-funded\, BJC4NYC: Bringing a Rigorous Computer Science Principles Course to NYC. \nWhy Papert Matters\nThe world recently lost a great mathematician\, philosopher\, educational theorist\, inventor\, school reformer\, and freedom fighter\, Dr. Seymour Papert\, father of educational computing. Dr. Gary Stager had the good fortune of working with Dr. Papert for twenty years\, including as the principal investigator on Papert’s last major institutional research project – creating a high-tech\, multi-age\, alternative learning environment inside of a troubled prison for teenagers. He has also spent more than three decades helping schools around the world embrace forms of Papertian education\, including pioneer work in 1:1 computing and teaching programming to children. Stager also curates the Papert archives found at DailyPapert.com. \nIn this lecture\, we will explore Papert’s many contributions to education today and his vision for making the world a better place for learners in the future. \nMaking: A Way of Learning (featuring Sylvia Martinez)\nLearning outside of school is being transformed by the trends of tinkering\, maker culture and personal fabrication. SUMMARY:Happy 45th Birthday Maker Movement! @ISTE 2016
DESCRIPTION:A day of hard fun is in store for one and all!\nIn 1971\, our friends Cynthia Solomon and Seymour Papert published a paper that changed the world. “Twenty Things to Do with a Computer” not only explored computers as objects to think with and vehicles for self-expression\, this seminal paper advocated for 1:1 computing\, coding across the curriculum\, and gave birth to the modern maker movement. \nTen years later\, in 1981\, Papert published the most important book ever written about computers and learning\, “Mindstorms: Children\, Computers\, and Powerful Ideas.” This book raised the bar on how people perceived children’s relationship with computers and their ability to construct knowledge. \nOn June 26\, 2016 (one day before ISTE 2016)\, Constructing Modern Knowledge will proudly celebrate the 45th birthday of the maker movement and the 35th anniversary of Mindstorms. The day promises to feed the heart\, head\, and tummy. \nDate: Sunday\, June 26th 2016\nTime: 9AM – 3PM (You will have plenty of time to get to the ISTE opening session)\nLocation: Maggiano’s Little Italy (Denver Pavilions)\n500 16th St. Denver\, Colorado  (3 short blocks from the Denver Convention Center\, site of ISTE 2016)\nPrice: $110 (after May 1\, $125) includes 6 hour workshop\, breakfast\, lunch\, coffee\, and soft drinks – half the cost of ISTE workshops\, plus amazing food all day long! \nRegister today – space is limited! \nThis very special event will feature the following activities: \n\nA presentation by Dr. Gary Stager on the legacy of Twenty Things To Do With a Computerand Mindstorms\nComputer programming activities in Turtle Art\, along with visible teaching strategies highlighted for teaching coding to diverse student populations\nPhysical computing projects inspired by “Twenty Things…”\nUnderstanding the Internet of Things\nProgramming a variety of drones\, robots\, and appliances via Tickle on the iPad\nSylvia Martinez will facilitate participants evaluating current practice in light of the historic documents with an eye towards inclusion and equity\nLeave with an action plan and next steps for moving forward\n\nBring a laptop (PC or Mac) with the ability to install software.
