SUMMARY:A Taste of CMK in Philadephia!
DESCRIPTION:  \nConstructing Modern Knowledge is excited to offer 3 free hands-on workshops on June 27\, 2023 across the street from the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Bring your laptop\, appetite\, and thirst for hands-on learning and join us for some mini learning adventures. Join Dr. Gary Stager and Sylvia Martinez\, co-authors of Invent to Learn – Making\, Tinkering\, and Engineering in the Classroom at Maggiano’s Little Italy for one or more of the day’s events. \nWorkshop Menu\nAll levels welcome!\n9:00 – 10:15 AM Secrets of the micro:bit (with continental breakfast)\nThe $15 BBC micro:bit is a technological marvel allowing learners of all ages to build interactive systems with code\, craft supplies\, and recycled materials. This workshop will help jumpstart your micro:bit learning adventures and expand your sense of the possibilities. A variety of programming environments\, project ideas\, and extension boards will be available for exploration. Leave with practical ideas for physical computing and computation in your classroom with the micro:bit and Microsoft MakeCode. \n\nRegister for the micro:bit workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:30 – 11:45 AM Messing About with the Hummingbird Bit Robotics Kit (with snacks)\nThe Hummingbird Bit Robotics Kit is our favorite set of materials for learning-by-making. Its inventor\, Dr. Tom Lauwers – CEO of BirdBrain Technologies\, joins Gary and Sylvia for this no-nonsense introduction to this exciting construction kit. Combine craft materials\, recycled junk\, motors\, lights\, sensors\, and computer science to create a rich physical computing context for learning. \n\nRegister for the Hummingbird Robotics workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:45 – 3:15 PM Coding in the Age of AI (with snacks)\nGary Stager will lead participants through a series of playful programming challenges that allow them to “mess about” with language\, interrogate data\, develop computational fluency\, and gain a deeper understanding of the promises of artificial intelligence by having personal agency over an increasingly complex and technologically sophisticated world. \nRegister for the Coding & AI workshop

SUMMARY:ATLIS 2023
DESCRIPTION:Gary Stager will lead a presentation\, “The Case Against Innovation\,” at ATLIS 2023 in Grand Rapids\, MI. \nYou read that correctly! Innovation is the wrong focus for schools. complete with perverse incentives and diminishing returns. The quest for innovation breeds instability and favors novelty over quality. It generates fatigue\, costly detours\, and distractions. Worst of all\, self- proclaimed innovators rarely produce evidence of actual innovation. Cautioning against innovation addiction doesn’t excuse inaction\, encourage sloth\, or justify the status quo. It is necessary to educate well. \nThis buzzworthy session will explore the unmet needs of students\, teachers\, and communities left in the wake of an overemphasis on marketing\, competition\, while offering healthier approaches to building and sustaining educational excellence. \nThis presentation will:\n• Consider the high cost of innovation.\n• Assess innovation\, claims of innovation\, and recognize that we stand on the shoulders of giants.\n• Explore alternatives aligned with the core mission of schooling. \nA growing body of literature from the business community supports these assertions. \n

SUMMARY:Educon 2023
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia and Gary will be leading conversations at Educon – Philadelphia\n\nYou Could Write a Book. Sharing Your Ideals with the World.\n\nSESSION 1 – Sylvia Martinez \n\nYou’ve got ideas and classroom expertise. Why not share it with others? This session will help you think about publishing a book\, including planning\, platforms\, and publishing strategies. \nReclaiming Project-Based Learning\n\nSESSION 4 – Gary Stager \n\nThe growing popularity of learner-centered approaches\, like project-based learning\, are susceptible to being hijacked\, trivialized\, and then dismissed as “ineffective” by cynical critics. This session offers a coherent progressive vision of PBL\, that withstands scrutiny and produces more productive contexts for learning. Practical strategies and learning adventures will be shared. \nTwenty Things to Do with a Computer – Your Tech Plan for the Next 50 Years \nSession 6 – Gary Stager \nEducators benefit when they understand that they stand on the shoulders of giants. Without the vision of Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon educational computing and the maker movement might not exist. They created a progressive vision for the field and many of the tools and many of the pedagogical metaphors that continue to guide effective practice. \nIn 1971\, they not only predicted 1:1 computing for every child\, physical computing\, computer science for all\, and the maker movement\, but they demonstrated what it looked like in practice. Despite that\, their provocations remain unrealized in far too many schools a half century later. \nThe presenter’s recent book project assembled nearly four dozen of the world’s leading technologists\, educators\, scholars\, educators\, and visionaries to explore the wisdom of Twenty Things to Do with a Computer\, reflect on our progress\, and set a course for the next 50 years. \nSchools seeking a tech plan\, would be well served by recognizing that we stand on the shoulders of giants and that the goals of a 1971 document remain sadly elusive for too many of our students. This workshop hopes to help remediate that situation. \nThe scenarios presented not only inform technology planning\, but prepare educators to be sufficiently future-ready to sustain pedagogical progress and maintain the viability of schooling. \nAt EDUCON\, the presenter and author of the new book\, “Twenty Things to Do with a Computer – Forward 50: Future Visions of Education Inspired by Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon’s Seminal Work\,” recounts the vision of Papert and Solomon\, share the reflections of the book’s extraordinary contributors\, and propose epistemic lenses for guiding educational progress over the next fifty years.

SUMMARY:Twenty Things to Do with a Computer: Your 100-Year Tech Plan
DESCRIPTION:Cynthia Solomon and Seymour Papert predicted 1:1 personal computing\, the maker movement\, the rise of computational thinking\, and computing across the curriculum — fifty years ago. Yet we are still striving to situate their progressive ideal in a modern context with computing that is creative\, humane\, whimsical\, childlike\, and central to learning “everything else.” Celebrating the anniversary of their work\, the presenter has authored a book in collaboration with leading voices in education and technology\, who offer compelling arguments and practical examples of what the future of education can look like when we stand on the shoulders of giants. In this workshop\, you will be actively engaged in designing programs for your school that acknowledge where the light is pointing for the next half-century.
