SUMMARY:NAEYC - Situating the Maker Movement in a Reggio Emilia Context
DESCRIPTION:Gary Stager will lead a hands-on workshop at the annual National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) conference in Los Angeles. \n \nJoin colleagues for three hours of hard fun\, creativity\, and problem solving — where computing meets tinkering and design. The workshop begins with the case for project- based learning\, making\, tinkering\, and engineering. Next\, we will discuss strategies for effective prompt setting. You will view examples of children engaged in complex problem solving with new game- changing technologies and identify lessons for your own classroom practice. Powerful ideas from the Reggio Emilia Approach\, breakthroughs in science education\, and the global maker movement combine to create rich learning experiences. This is where S.T.E.M. and timeless craft traditions super-charge each other. Participants will have the chance to tinker with a range of exciting new low- and high- tech construction materials that can really amplify the potential of your students. Fabrication with cardboard and found materials\, wearable computing\, Arduino micro controllers\, Humingbird robotics\, littleBits\, Circuit Stickers\, Circuit Scribe conductive ink pens\, drones\, robots\, and computer programming are all on the menu. Bring a laptop and your imagination. We’ll supply the rest (craft materials\, art supplies\, construction elements). Invention is the mother of learning! \nREGISTRATION IS PART OF THE CONFERENCE REGISTRATION \n

SUMMARY:Fab Lab 12 (Sylvia)
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia will be part of a panel at Fab Lab 12 Symposium in Shenzhen China on the topic of “Organizations that Make Organizations.” \nEach year members of the more than 1\,000 worldwide Fab Labs gather to share\, collaborate\, explore and\, of course\, fabricate. This year\, August 2016\, we meet in Shenzhen\, China a historically important city for manufacturing and making. Today China is embarking on a long-term program to foster innovation and technology\, so the city is a perfect incubator for the digital fabrication revolution fab labs are bringing to the world. \nThis year our focus will be on Fab Lab 2.0\, the ability of a fab lab to use its own digital fabrication tools to produce a fab lab and to produce the manufacturing machines of the future. \nWe’ll have the annual Symposium\, the Fab City pledge and the Fab Academy Graduation.

SUMMARY:2016 Engineering Deans Institute (EDI) Annual Conference (Sylvia panel)
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia is an invited presenter for a panel on innovation at the 2016 Engineering Deans Institute (EDI) Annual Conference \n\nASEE’s annual Engineering Deans Institute (EDI) provides an opportunity for engineering deans- and only deans- to gather and discuss the crucial issues facing their schools\, colleges\, and profession. For a few days\, a single-stream program fosters dialogue between deans\, industry leaders\, and those in important roles in research and government. Deans share best practices\, learn about career prospects for their graduates\, and develop a voice for engineering education and the role of engineering in society. Social activities and plenty of time for conversation encourage the cultivation of relationships and an intensely rewarding experience. \nEDI is sponsored by the ASEE Engineering Deans Council and its Executive Board.

SUMMARY:ASB Unplugged (Gary Stager - Featured Speaker & Workshop Leader)
DESCRIPTION:Gary will return to The American School of Bombay for the 5th time and his 3rd ASB Unplugged Conference. \nHis sessions include: \nProgramming: The New Liberal Art – Why and How to Teach It (full-day preconference) \nIn the mid-1960s\, Seymour Papert asked\, “Does the computer program the child or the child program the computer.” Programming is a way of seeing. \nBeyond vocational benefits\, computer programming gives young people agency over an increasingly complex technologically sophisticated world. Programming is fundamental to engineering\, science\, making sense of data\, and mirrors the writing process. If your goals are as modest as to improve achievement in ab otherwise unchanged mathematics curriculum\, then we would teach every child to program computers since programming is one of the few contexts for using the math taught to kids. Without programming\, computational thinking becomes a rhetorical exercise. \nDespite these self-evident benefits\, schools go to extraordinary lengths to deprive students of programming experiences. \nThis workshop will provide hands-on experience with creating beautiful art in Turtle Art\, controlling external devices with Snap!\, and flying drones with Tickle (an iPad dialect of Scratch). Examples of K-8 programming integration projects will be shared and we will look at options for teaching the new Computer Science Principles AP course. Strategies for teaching programming across the curriculum and various grade levels will be discussed. \nMaking: Children\, Computers\, and Powerful Ideas (3-hour talk repeated on consecutive mornings) \nWhile this presentation will explore the virtues of learning-by-making and its theoretical and historical contexts\, we will discuss the structural changes necessary to for schools to gain benefit from the maker movement. We must recognize that making is not new\, but may still become a short-term fad without a coherent constructive educational vision having little to do with the construction of a “space.” The roles of expertise\, continuous growth\, prompt setting\, project development\, and curricular design to create the conditions necessary for sustaining and learning from making.

SUMMARY:World Maker Faire
DESCRIPTION:Gary and Sylvia will present at World Maker Faire in NYC\, Sept 20-21\, 2014 \nPractical Advice for Bringing Making to School\n\n\n\nDay\nStart Time\nEnd Time\nLocations\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\n11:00 AM\n11:30 AM\nMake: Education Stage\n\n\nSunday\n11:30 AM\n12:00 PM\nMake: Education Stage\n\n\n\nParents of makers know that when their children are programming\, building robots\, and inventing\, they are learning. Yet at school\, learning becomes serious and sometimes boring. Why can’t learning at school be like the vibrant\, joyful learning we see at Maker Faire\, and in homes of makers all around the world? \nIn the spirit of Maker Faire and global making\, we will share practical advice for parents of makers\, educators\, and makers themselves who want to re-make schools into places where children love to learn once again. \nIn true Maker fashion\, everyone has a part to play in this revolution!
