SUMMARY:Twenty Things to Do with a Computer: Your 100-Year Tech Plan
DESCRIPTION:Cynthia Solomon and Seymour Papert predicted 1:1 personal computing\, the maker movement\, the rise of computational thinking\, and computing across the curriculum — fifty years ago. Yet we are still striving to situate their progressive ideal in a modern context with computing that is creative\, humane\, whimsical\, childlike\, and central to learning “everything else.” Celebrating the anniversary of their work\, the presenter has authored a book in collaboration with leading voices in education and technology\, who offer compelling arguments and practical examples of what the future of education can look like when we stand on the shoulders of giants. In this workshop\, you will be actively engaged in designing programs for your school that acknowledge where the light is pointing for the next half-century.

SUMMARY:COSN 2019 - ENVISION 2030: LEADERSHIP FOR LEARNING
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Martinez will be a spotlight speaker at ENVISION 2030: LEADERSHIP FOR LEARNING – the COSN Annual Conference. \nSTEAM to the Future: What’s Next in STEAM\, Design\, and Making\n9:15 AM – 9:45 AM: Breakout\nRoom: Atrium Ballroom (Hilton Portland Downtown)\nFormat: Spotlight Session\nPresenters: Sylvia Martinez\, Columbia University FabLearn Fellows\, Principal Advisor\n\n\nBrief Session Description: Let’s time travel a few decades forward to see what science\, technology\, engineering\, and math will be like\, and the prominent role that the arts\, design \,and creativity will play in the future. Right now\, scientists and engineers are creating a future where biology and engineering mix with computation and computer science. The future holds things like driverless cars\, buildings that heal themselves\, “radical mycology\,” which are plastics that adopt organic properties from mushrooms\, clothes that adjust to the weather\, robots\, Artificial Intelligence\, and holodeck-like experiences that will bend the definition of reality. However\, this fourth industrial revolution is not some far away abstraction\, all of these futuristic visions will depend on the ingenuity and creativity of people who are K-12 students today. We owe it to them to teach them how to make\, design\, and create using the most modern technology in their STEAM classes today. \nWhat are the implications for K-12 education when subjects are being reinvented every year? Are we content with providing students with science classes that don’t cover any science invented this century? What questions do education leaders need to answer to make sure that the future of STEAM is part of schools starting today.

SUMMARY:II Congreso Revolución en la Educación: Escuelas de Innovación
DESCRIPTION:Gary Stager will be a keynote speaker and lead breakout sessions at this conference in Bogota\, Colombia. \n\nKeynote: \n\nBeyond Creativity: Educating for an Uncertain World \nJoin Dr. Gary Stager as he makes the case for embracing modernity as a way of preserving the finest traditions of child development and preparing children to solve problems neither their parents or teachers can imagine. As a father\, grandfather\, and veteran educator\, Gary remains optimistic that each kid can realize their potential if parents and educators are courageous enough to stand on the side of children. During his presentation\, Gary will illustrate how learning-by-doing\, new technological materials\, and timeless craft traditions can supercharge the learning process. He will encourage us to educate for the the future of our kids\, rather than our past\, and demonstrate how not all screens are created equally. Along the way\, he will share evidence of educators more than up to this herculean challenge. \n\nLearn how to prepare children to solve problems that neither their parents or teachers can imagine\nUnderstand how emerging technology may amplify the potential of each student\nSee how learning-by-doing\, new technological materials\, and timeless craft traditions can supercharge the learning process\n\nSessions: \n\n\nA Conversation with Gary Stager\nDr. Gary Stager is considered one of the world’s leading authority on learning-by-doing\, robotics\, computer programming\, and the maker movement in classrooms. He led professional development in the world’s first “laptop schools” 28 years ago\, created one of the first online Masters degree programs for educators\, worked with severely at-risk learners\, and collaborated with Seymour Papert for two decades. Over the past thirty-five years\, he has worked in schools on six continents and taught learners from preschool through the doctoral level. This session represents a rare opportunity to ask questions and engage in freewheeling discussions about the future of education following his conference keynote.\n\n\nTeaching Coding and Physical Computing\nLearn how a project-approach to computer programming\, robotics\, and physical computing can serve a diverse student population while developing your own skills. This workshop will explore powerful ideas from computer science and engineering that may be employed in the solving of problems across the curriculum. A review of software and hardware options will be explored in addition to two focused programming and robotics activities. Participants will also have experience with the BBC Micro:bit and other low-cost “microcontroller development boards” offering great potential for learning through making\, tinkering\, and engineering in the classroom. \n\n \nReinventing Children’s Mathematics\nThere may be no greater gap between a discipline and the teaching done in its name than when the beauty\, power and mystery of mathematics become math instruction. One can only begin to address the systemic challenges of math education by understanding the nature of mathematics and the power of computing. Nearly 100 years of efforts to increase achievement with unchanged curricular content continues to fail spectacularly; yet\, we do not change course. This state-of-affairs undermines other efforts at school progress. Surely\, the widespread availability of computational technology demands new pedagogical approaches and a new diet of mathematics.

SUMMARY:FabLearn 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia will be the opening keynote and lead a workshop at FabLearn 2019 at Columbia University Teachers College\, New York City\, NY. \nKeynote: Making the Future: The Future of Making\nMarch 9\, 2019 \nMaking in education connects educators around the world in a quest to make education more authentic and relevant. We stand on the shoulders of giants who articulated new understandings of what learning could be and new ways to explore powerful ideas. In the present\, we strive to deepen our commitment to provide authentic learning opportunities for all young people. We look into the future to see what the children in today’s classrooms will experience\, and support them as they become changemakers and global citizens. \nTogether\, let’s explore the past\, present\, and future of making in education so that we can equip children with the tools and mindset to solve the challenges of the future\, and make the world a better place for all. \nWorkshop: Making Making Sustainable: A Collective Blueprint For the Future\nGDH 541 (to be confirmed) Sunday March 10\, 2019\nFacilitators: Sylvia Martinez (Invent to Learn\, USA) \nABSTRACT: Will making in education have a lasting effect on education\, or will it become just another “new new thing” that is overtaken by some newer new thing? This workshop will be a working group to create a blueprint of items and actions that the participants believe will help make “making” in education a sustainable practice in schools worldwide. The nature of the blueprint will be the first item of conversation\, followed by brainstorming on topics. I expect these topics will be things like: classroom practices\, research needed\, professional development\, teacher certification\, resources\, policies\, assessment\, and curriculum. However\, the group may come up with other topics. \nMore about FabLearn 2019: 8th Annual Conference on Maker Education\nMarch 9th – 10th\, 2019\, Teachers College\, Columbia University\n2019 Conference theme: What Role does Maker Education Play in a World with Growing Social and Environmental Challenges?\nThe FabLearn Conference\, in-Cooperation with Association for Computing Machinery\, Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (ACM SIGCHI)\, brings together key influencers and thought-leaders from around the world in education\, policy-making\, academia\, design\, research\, and maker communities to learn\, present\, and discuss digital fabrication in education\, the maker culture\, hands-on learning\, and instructional tools. \nThe two-day conference features: \n\nWorld-renowned keynote speakers\nPanels of cutting-edge researchers and educators\nDemonstrations of the latest technology\nImmersive hands-on workshops\n\nThe conference has two primary goals: \n\nEstablishing the current “state of the field” by gathering information about the work conducted by those in the field\nDisseminating information about best practices and tools\, and connecting researchers with practitioners\, policy-makers\, and pioneering educators.

SUMMARY:ASCD Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Gary Stager will be leading a two-hour learning lab at the ASCD Annual Conference in Boston on March 25\, 2018. \n\n\n\n\nWhat If We Were Serious About Computer Science For All? \n\n\n\n\nNational and international calls to teach computer science to every child K-12 are laudable and in serious danger of being the most spectacular failure in the history of overhyped\, and ultimately failed\, educational innovations. Such an eventuality should be avoided since learning to program is a critical aspect of agency over an increasingly complex and technologically sophisticated world. Despite unprecedented access to computational tools\, very few students engage in any computing. This workshop intends to begin addressing this deficit through activities modeling sound pedagogical practices for teaching programming across grades and the curriculum. It will argue that computing is essential for computational thinking\, problem solving\, math education\, school reform and project-based learning that extend beyond rhetoric or vocabulary acquisition. We will think about how to teach programming as a consequence of actual programming experiences and lend a critical eye to the curricular curricula proposed by governments around the world.

SUMMARY:ASB Unplugged 2018
DESCRIPTION:Gary Stager will once again be a featured presenter at the ASB Unplugged Conference in Mumbai where he will lead a full-day pre-conference workshop and two half-day workshops. \nFull day pre-conference workshop \nReinvent Mathematics Education and You Change the World\nThere may be no greater gap between a discipline and the teaching done in its name than when the beauty\, power and mystery of mathematics become math instruction. Nary a single pedagogical innovation of the past century has had any impact on school math instruction. If that alone were insufficiently troublesome\, its negative impact on all other aspects of schooling is too often underestimated. No matter how child-centered or progressive a school might think itself to be\, a failure to address “math” means that coercion is ultimately reintroduced into the system. Such coercion is corrosive and will ultimately erode any other progress. So\, what to do?\n\nOne can only begin to address the systemic challenges of math education by understanding the nature of mathematics and the power of computing. Countess decades worth of efforts to increase achievement with unchanged curricular content continues to fail spectacularly; yet\, we do not change course. Surely\, the widespread availability of computational technology demands new pedagogical approaches and a new diet of mathematics. This workshop moves beyond the goal of making math instruction engaging for children by providing educators with authentic mathematical thinking experiences. Such experiences acknowledge the role computers play in mathematics and society’s increasing demand for computational thinking. Project-based approaches with mathematics at the center of the activity will be explored. Traditional concepts such as numeracy\, geometry\, probability and graphing will be investigated in addition to exciting new branches of mathematics rarely found in the primary grades. Such experiences are required for educators seeking to create a new diet of mathematics for children. This workshop is designed for teachers of grades K-8\, but there is plenty to offer high school teachers as well\, particularly in the areas of computation and rethinking the math curriculum.\nHalf-DayThree QuestionsEducators like to talk about educational transformation\, reinvention\, or even revolution\, but their practical vision for achieving such dreams rarely extends past step one. Educators yearning to create more productive contexts for learning should at least be able to answer three essential questions about teaching and learning. This session will introduce three provocative questions via classroom vignettes and the perspectives of big thinkers whose ideas can and should shape future pedagogical practice  Then there will be a chance to think aloud\, clarify your stance towards the future of education\, and begin planning for implementation.A companion eBook on radical educational practices will be shared.\n\nMaking Computer Science For All A Reality\n \nNational and international calls to teach computer science to every child K-12 are laudable and in serious danger of being the most spectacular failure in the history of overhyped\, and ultimately failed\, educational innovations. Such an eventuality should be avoided since learning to program is a critical aspect of agency over an increasingly complex and technologically sophisticated world. Every career requires programming skill and the great scientist Stephen Wolfram predicts that in the near future\, current occupations will be challenged by versions of the same\, preceded by the term\, “computational.” There will be computational art\, computational history\, computational biology\, computational engineering\, etc… Programming is also fun and a meaningful context for learning math and science.\n\nDespite unprecedented access to computational tools\, very few student engage in any computing. This workshop intends to begin addressing this deficit through a discussion of sound pedagogical practices for teaching programming across grades and across the curriculum. It will argue that computing is essential for computational thinking\, problem solving\, math education\, and project-based learning that extend beyond rhetoric or vocabulary acquisition. We will think about how to teach programming as a consequence of actual programming experiences and lend a critical eye to the preposterous scope and sequences proposed by governments around the world.\n\nThis workshop will also explore how block-based languages offer beginners and their teachers a comfortable on-ramp to computer programming\, but are not inferior “baby languages.” We will look at a range of block-based environments for PC\, Mac\, and iOS that support the creation of animated stories\, video games\, mathematical microworlds\, complex simulations\, 3D design\, robots\, and controlling popular toys\, including Sphero\, Dot and Dash\, and LEGO. It is even possible to 3D print objects programmed in Beetleblocks\, a block-based programming language. Pedagogical techniques for introducing computer science and stimulating inquiry will be modeled and classroom implementation strategies discussed.\n\nSubscribe to our newsletter for more information about this and other upcoming events.
