New Jersey Educational Computing Conference

January 10, 2018

Dr. Stager returns to NJ to speak at the conference he started in 1987 and led for seven years, NJECC.

At this year’s conference, Gary will be leading a brand new presentation and workshop.

Your School is Only as Good as Your Math Instruction (presentation)
Nary a single pedagogical innovation of the past century has had any impact on school math instruction. If that alone were insufficiently troublesome, “math” undermines all other reform efforts.

This presentation will explore the following issues:
1. The critical conflicts between traditional math instruction and effective progressive schooling
2. How a variety of computational technologies allow students to be mathematicians, meaningfully explore new knowledge domains, and increase achievement
3. Creating a new diet of mathematics that kids can love rather than tricks to teach a math they hate
Block-based languages offer beginners and their teachers a comfortable on-ramp to computer programming, but they are not “baby languages.” This workshop will explore a range of block-based environments for PC, Mac, and iOS that support the creation of animated stories, video games, mathematical microworlds, complex simulations, 3D design, robots, and controlling popular toys, including LEGO. Pedagogical techniques for introducing computational learning and stimulating inquiry will be modeled and classroom implementation strategies discussed. We will also share the remarkable Wolfram Language.
